Catalogue Note

"I would like to have invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most comfortable and the most casual of all clothes. They possess expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - everything I want in my clothes."
Yves Saint Laurent

The artist is attentive to changes in fashion, hairstyles and accessories. The woman is sat still, staring at us with a stoic ease in a pair of blue jeans, the most democratic of fashion pieces.
The painter, who belongs, to the New York school, developed his highly stylized aesthetic in reaction to the abstract expressionism of the 50s, finding personal distinction between formalism and representation. His figurative paintings are rendered in a flat style inspired by everyday visual culture such as advertising and cinema, in many ways anticipating both the formal and conceptual concerns of Pop Art.
