Catalogue Note

The sitter was the only daughter and heiress of Conolly Gage, of Bellarena House in County Londonderry. In 1851 she married Sir Frederick William Heygate, 2nd Bt., Member of Parliament for County Londonderry (1859-74). Named Bellarena, meaning 'the beautiful strand', the cliffs in the background are a distinctive feature of the local area.
