  • A collection of books and bound volumes, mostly 18th century, comprising:

i) Carracci, Annibale—Aquila, Pietro. Galeriae Farnesianæ icones romae… Rome: G.G. de' Rossi, [1674], oblong folio (510 x 760mm.), engraved title, dedication with portrait, allegorical title, portrait of Carracci, and 21 plates by Aquila after Carracci, stitched [Berlin Catalogue 4088], worn, some significant tears, including to title page with loss to lettering and to final plateii) Le Brun, Charles. La Grande Galerie de Versailles et Les Deux Salons qui l’Accompagnent. Paris: De L’Imprimerie Royale, 1752, folio (610 x 455mm.), portrait frontispiece and 52 plates (23 double-page) by Aubert and others after Le Brun and Masse, full calf decorated in blind [Cohen-de Ricci 609], small tear in plate 32, plates 35 and 44 with wear and some minor loss at folds, small repair to title pageiii) Mulinari, Stefano. Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings, from the Restoration of the Arts in Italy, to the Present Time. Printed for the Author, 1798, folio (582 x 560mm.), dedication to Benjamin West, text in English and French, 158 illustrations in 128 plates on 108 sheets, mostly coloured aquatint, full diced Russia [ESTC N7756], one plate torn (not affecting image); together with 7 others and four folio volumes of engravings and prints, with works after Corneille Schut, Michelangelo, Charles Coypel, Charles Le Brun and Piranesi, and including one map (on three sheets), all somewhat worn, bindings rubbed, sheets frayed at extremities (15)

i) Carracci, Annibale—Aquila, Pietro. Galeriae Farnesianæ icones romae… Rome: G.G. de' Rossi, [1674], oblong folio (510 x 760mm.), engraved title, dedication with portrait, allegorical title, portrait of Carracci, and 21 plates by Aquila after Carracci, stitched [Berlin Catalogue 4088], title and final plate soiled and torn, with some loss to final plate and significant area of loss to centre of title page (including some lettering) and to upper left corner, plate edges worn with tears (largely not affecting images)

ii) Romano, Giuluo--Bartoli, Pietro Santi. Sigismundi Augusti mantuam adeuntis profectio ac triumphus. Rome: G.G. de' Rossi, [1680], oblong folio (361 x 490mm.), engraved title, dedication leaf and 26 plates by Bartoli after Romano, wrappers [Berlin 4075; Cicognara 3605], wrappers and sheet worn at extremities, some spotting and browning (mostly to versos of plates)

iii) Bellori, Giovanni Pietro--Bartoli, Pietro Santi. Columna Cochlis M. Aurelio Antonino Augusto Dicata. Rome: Domenico de’Rossi, 1704, oblong folio (364 x 480mm.), second edition, engraved dedication leaf and 80 plates (numbered 1-77 and I, II and III), calf backed boards [Cicognara 3605], loss to lower corner of plate 49 (not affecting image), binding a little rubbed

iv) Perrier, Francois. Segmenta nobilium signorum e statuaru[m]. Paris: Widow of Francois Chereau, [between 1729 and 1755], 4to (335 x 233mm.), engraved title page and 85 (of 100) numbered plates, all plates signed "FPB" except the first which is signed "Franciscus Perrier Burgund…1638", some plates mounted on new sheets, 2 index leaves (dated 1638), calf backed marbled boards [Sir William Forbes, bookplate] [cf. Cicognara 3538; cf. Rossetti Rome 8055-8057], lacking 15 plates (12, 18, 23, 62, 74-84), manuscript notes and sketches on versos and blanks, some wear to binding, some browning

v) Picart, Bernard. Recueil de Lions. Amsterdam: Bernard Picart, 1729, small 4to (192 x 257mm.), title page printed in black and red with vignette, engraved fly title to the plates section, 30 full-page engraved plates and 12 engraved plates on six leaves by Picart after Durer, Le Brun, Rembrandt, marbled wrappers inscribed "Lions", worn with loss (not affecting images), lacking lower half of lower wrapper

vi) Le Brun, Charles. La Grande Galerie de Versailles et Les Deux Salons qui l’Accompagnent. viii) Richardson, George. A treatise on the five orders of architecture. For the author, 1787, folio (535 x 345mm.), text in English and French, 22 numbered full-page aquatint plates, with the prospectus for the work loosely inserted (which suggests that 32 plates were originally intended), paper boards [Abbey Life 58 (listing 22 plates)], worn at extremities

ix) Metz, Conrad Martin. Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings, from the Restoration of the Arts in Italy, to the Present Time. x) Forster, Edward. Prospectus of the British Gallery of Engravings. William Miller, 1807, folio (558 x 410mm.), text in English and French, 48 (of 52?) engraved plates, half calf, all edges speckled [John Stuart Forbes, bookplate], boards worn, hinges fragile and reinforced at inner gutter, spine very worn

xi) [Alte Pinakothek]. Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim. Munich: 1817, volume 1 (of 2) only, folio (620 x 444mm.), frontispiece and 48 lithographed plates by Strixner, Piloty and others, half calf, spine in compartments, raised bands decorated in gilt, boards a little worn

Four folio volumes of engravings and prints:

i) A collection of 98 engravings on 45 sheets after Corneille Schut, including one full page dedicatory leaf to Andreae Cantelmo featuring lions, harpies and an eagle, and another full page engraving showing Schut below three cherubs holding a cloth bearing a description of the artist, c.1620-1655, bound in a single folio volume (452 x 350mm.), limp vellum, worn, some loss to vellum, occasional light soiling to sheets

ii) [Sistine Chapel]. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de’ Rossi, 1649 [?], 4 engraved plates by Cherubino Alberti after Michelangelo, each 310 x 205mm.; [Last Judgement]. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de’ Rossi, [c.1677], 12 plates on 11 sheets (each 620 x 505mm.), the first with two unnumbered engravings (a portrait of Michelangelo by Giorgio Ghisi after Venusti and an image of the whole fresco by Sebastiano Fulcaro), followed by a series of ten engravings by Ghisi after Michelangelo, each irregularly shaped and depicting a portion of The Last Judgement from the Sistine Chapel, lettered A-H, L, and AA; [Prophets and Sybils]. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de’ Rossi, [17th century], a series of 6 prints by Giorgio Ghisi after Michelangelo, each c.560 x 440mm. (sheet size 630 x 500mm.), depicting six of the twelve prophets and sybils from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, several dated incorrectly “1540” (almost certainly erroneously); Miare, Christopher. Nuova carta geografica dello stato ecclesiastico. Rome: [c.1750], one map on three sheets (each 505 x 755mm.); bound in a single folio volume (780 x 510mm.), paper wrappers, wrappers lightly soiled

iii) "Recueil Des Estampe", a collection of 35 engravings, including 21 scenes from Don Quixote after Charles Coypel and 7 engravings (5 double page) after Charles Le Brun, 17th-18th century, bound in a single folio volume (460 x 380mm.), mottled calf, ruled in gilt,  spine gilt in compartments, some wear and minor tears to edges of sheets, binding worn, joints cracked

iv) "Statue Antiche", a collection of 32 engravings of classical statues, including 3 by Piroli after Piranesi and 29 plates probably from Il Museo Pio-Clementino descritto da Giambattista Viscontifolio, mostly by Marco Carloni, many numbered, bound in a single folio volume (595 x 395mm.), numerous blank leaves at end, calf backed marbled boards, boards somewhat rubbed
