A LARGE COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS OF EGYPT, TOGETHER WITH TRACINGS OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MONUMENTS BY LLOYD WHO CARRIED OUT EXTENSIVE EXCAVATIONS AT THEBES WITH PRISSE D'AVENNES BETWEEN 1839 AND 1843. George Lloyd (1815-43) was an amateur archaeologist, botanist and traveller, and Vice President of the Literary Society of Egypt, established in Cairo. He was born in India, the only son of Major Sir William Lloyd (1782-1857) and an Indian mother, and later educated in Germany. In 1840 he edited a Narrative of a Journey from Caunpoor to the Boorendo Pass in the Himalayan Mountains, written by his father, and two other similar works by Captain A. Gerard. Between 1839 and 1845 he worked with the French Egyptologist Prisse d'Avennes at Thebes, where he made several discoveries, however he was killed at Thebes after an accident with his gun aged 28. Prisse d'Avennes dedicated his Oriental Album to Lloyd and portrayed him in the work wearing Arab dress. The present album of drawings also includes a pencil portrait of Lloyd captioned 'Cairo 1 April 1843, sketched by Prince A. Soltykoff.'
