- A pair of painted scrolls of birds. [Japan, late 18th or early 19th century]
- ink and colord on paper and silk
2 long hand-scrolls, formed of 9- and 7-joined sheets of mulberry paper (overall 31 x 797cm., and 31 x 659cm.), depicting approximately 114 different types of birds in naturalistic settings FINELY PAINTED BY HAND, nearly all captioned in Japanese (and occasionally Chinese) in ink on gold leaf slips, the first scroll inscribed at end: 明文斎林朝圖 (Meibunsai Rinchô Zu, i.e. from the workshop of Rinchô), the second inscribed: 林朝圖 (Rinchô Zu)', silk end-papers and ties, preserved in a modern fitted wooden box with lid, some worming (restored) and spotting, slightly rubbed
