with ropework borders, lower body chased with cattails and leaf-tips, the ropework handles applied with cattails and terminate in Neptune masks, one side engraved with a three-masted ship within a nautical reserve and the other side with presentation inscription

two larger dings to body and some shallow creases on the presentation inscription, otherwise good, decoration crisp

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads "PRESENTED TO Captain Sidney Grenfell, RN Commanding H.M.S. "AMETHYST" on the Western Coast of Mexico, By Barron Forbes & Co, As a token of their gratitude for the Timely and Energetic aid rendered to their Representative Mr. JOHN F. ALLSOPP, at Tepic & San Blas, in the year 1859."

Sidney Grenfell (1806-1884) served in the British Royal Navy from 1822-78. He was the Captain of the HMS Amethyst from July 1856 to December 1860. John F. Allsopp was the superintendent of Barron, Forbes and Co. (c. 1820s-1893), a powerful Pacific coast trade, mercantile, and banking firm based out of San Blas and Tepic, Mexico.
