Catalogue Note

The arms are those of John Holles, Earl of Clare and Duke of Newcastle, 1662-1711, son of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare. He married Lady Margaret Cavendish, 3rd daughter and co-heiress of Henry Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle 1690. He was created Duke 1694, K.G. 1698, Lord Privy Seal 1705-11.
