Catalogue Note

The inscription on the side reads "Presented on his Retirement to Sir Clive Morrison Bell, Bt. Member of Parliament for East Devon for over Twenty-one Years by his Friends in the Division 1932." The engraved base reads "Model from the Tariff Walls Map used by Sir Clive Morrison-Bell, M.P. in his Campaign 1927-1931 Against the High Tariff Walls in Europe."

Sir Arthur Clive Morrison-Bell (1871-1956), 1st Baronet, was a British soldier and Conservative Party parliamentarian. In order to promote European cooperation in free trade, he built a physical model of the tariff walls of Europe and exhibited it widely, including at the World Economic Conference in Geneva in 1927. He also authored the book Tariff Walls: A European Crusade in 1930.
