Catalogue Note

INSCRIBED with their landing dates and SIGNED a member from the first three Apollo lunar landings as follows: "BUZZ ALDRIN, Apollo XI, 7 – 20 – 69; Ocean of Storms, ALAN BEAN, Apollo XII LMP, Nov '69” and “Fra Mauro, EDGAR MITCHELL, Apollo 14 LMP, 2 / 71." Each has marked his landing site with an "X" or a circle.

Seven landing sites along the lunar equator were located in the Apollo Zone. These landing areas provided smoother terrain for the initial lunar landings as well as fewer difficulties if there were Earth launch delays or Earth emergency returns. The best area was landing site 2, selected for the Apollo 11 mission. Site 7 was used for Apollo 12 which happened to be the exact same area of Surveyor 3’s landing in 1967. Apollo 14's site was a new area targeted for science objectives based on engineering experience gained from the previous two landings.
