Catalogue Note

Throughout his life Albert Anker portrayed people in his immediate surroundings with astounding dedication and impressive technical mastery. The depiction of children holds a special place in Anker’s portraiture and was of personal importance to the painter. Anker‘s portraits are renowned for being wonderfully empatic, emphasizing the Swiss master’s great respect for his sitters. This particular talent was presumably one of the reasons why Anker was chosen as a member of the school commission in his hometown Ins.

In 1879 three of the artist’s paintings were exhibited in the important opening exhibition of the newly built Kunstmuseum Bern.

This work is registered in the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) under no. 92201.
