the shallow wood cover with a single panel top, gently curving to a beaded edge and straight sides, the conforming base enclosing a dark gray inkstone of rectangular shape carved with a bat amid clouds and a crescent moon forming the well, all supported on four low bracket feet (3)

Provenance

Acquired in San Francisco in the mid-1980s.

Condition

The inkstone has losses to the underside (including at two corners, and to an approx. 1 x 6-cm section along a lower edge), as well as scattered minor chips to the carved surface at the top. The inkstone has signs of use including light abrasion and ink residue. The box and cover are in mostly good condition with only minor expected scratches, small dents and nicks, and a crack with an associated chip at the corner of each. Two old labels are applied to the interior of the cover.
