Description

  • Edward S. Curtis
  • Chief of the Desert
  • OROTONE
orotone, signed, annotated 'L. A.,' and copyrighted in the negative, in the original Curtis Studio frame, with a typed caption/Curtis Studio label on the reverse, 1904 (Visions of a Vanishing Race, pl. 1; The North American Indian, p. 53)

Condition

This orotone is in generally very good condition and has rich bronze tones. There are several dark areas, possibly abrasions, on the underside which are mostly confined to the top one-and-1/2-inch portion of the image. On the reverse of the frame, there is some damp-staining and losses to the paper backing, which have been inexpertly repaired with tape in several places. 'ESC-17312' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil and there is a label with 'SH#131' in ink on the reverse of the frame.
