Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • 'White Branches, Mono Lake, California'
  • Gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 11), with title and date in ink, on the reverse, 1947, probably printed between 1973 and 1977 (400 Photographs, p. 254)

Condition

This print is generally in excellent condition. Upon extremely close inspection, deposits of original retouching and very faint linear scratches that do not appear to break the emulsion are visible. There is one tiny chip along the lower left edge. The reverse is faintly soiled with fingerprints. 'I 147.2' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the mount: 1973 through 1977. While this print is dated '1950,' the book '400 Photographs' correctly dates this image 1947.
