Description

  • Alonso de Berruguete
  • The Crucifixion
  • oil on panel, triangular shape

Condition

The support consists of three horizontal panels, with a horizontal batten on the reverse. The panels are uncradled. The panels have a very slight convex curvature. The paint surface is secure and stable. The lower panel join is visible, one-third of the way from the lower edge, running horizontally across the width of the work. Retouching is visible along the length. This join has recently been treated by Bobak Conservation Limited (please see report for details). Just above this join runs another, fainter, line of retouching, corresponding to an old break in the panel, now supported by the batten. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and small scattered retouchings in the rocks, sky at upper left and castle at left. The figures are largely free of retouching. The work is offered in a simple stained wood frame in good condition.
