Condition

The canvas has an old and stable relining, and has been cleaned and restored in the fairly recent past. There is an old vertical seam in the canvas, 40 cm. from the right-hand margin, which runs the height of the canvas. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a series of old repaired tears in the upper right-hand corner, and smaller tears upper left and upper centre. There is a further 8 in. horizontal tear, lower left, and a series of scattered old repaired losses in the lower margin and right-hand corner. Restoration is otherwise confined to scattered and more minor local repairs, notably in the sky around the Virgin's head, strengthening in the shadows of the blue robe and to the aforementioned seam. The restoration is not noticeably discoloured and the picture does not seem to require further attention - it is in very good overall condition. Offered in a later Spanish parcel gilt and painted wood frame in very good condition.
