Description

  • Francisco Herrera the Elder
  • Head of a young man in profile and head of an old man in profile, with a separate study of a full length figure holding a cross, upper left
  • Both pen and brown ink over black chalk

Condition

Edges of both sheets have been covered by the mount. From sight they both appear to be partially laid down. Young Man: Light scattered foxing throughout sheet and part of the mount. There are a number of small tears and losses throughout sheet. There is a horizontal tear running along his nose, cheek and hair. There are losses above his head. Surface dirt. Old Man: Losses and tears in the sheet. Under his ear there are cracks and tears mainly in the dark area of ink. There are small losses at the top of his head in the upper right corner. There is a hole in the upper left of sheet in the separate full length figure study. Red chalk studio stain upper left margin. Despite the above condition issues in both sheets the medium still remains strong and vibrant and drawings still retain their power.
