Condition

The canvas is unlined and slightly loose with visible stretcher marks. The work is unframed with surface wear to the edges. There is a tear to the centre of the canvas on the central figure's arm, in the shape of a backwards L measuring 1 cm squared. There are surface marks throughout. A line measuring 8 cm is in the upper right corner on the cheek of the upper right figure, and a patch on the reverse of the canvas, indicating a possible repair patch to the front in the upper frame edge which appears to be the work of the artist. Examination under UV shows no evidence of retouch or repair.

Catalogue Note

Geoffrey Ernest Katantazi Mukasa, born in Uganda in 1954, is widely recognised as one of East Africa’s most respected and sought-after painters; his work is held by collections in America, Europe and Africa.

Mukasa earned a Fine Arts degree in India at Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts. He left with a deep appreciation of Indian and European aesthetics and returned to Uganda with a style that was notably different from his peer group in East Africa. Favouring depictions of the female face, as he believed it was women who carried the biggest burdens of life, Mukasa created bold and dynamic works of art that wonderfully intertwine figural elements with abstract ones.
