Catalogue Note

first edition, one of 110 copies numbered and signed by Waugh and with a page of his original holograph manuscript bound in. The attractive page (12 ½  x 8 in.; 320 x 203), showing extensive revisions, is from the section dealing with Waugh’s stay on Malta. In exchange for free publicity about the ship line, Waugh arranged free passage for himself and his new bride on a Mediterranean cruise. The voyage turned out to be pure hell for the couple and by the time they returned to London their marriage was in a shambles. For the American edition, he changed the title to A Bachelor Abroad. A fine copy of the first of the several limited, signed editions of Waugh’s books.
