Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 17 December 1982, lot 28 (as Valentin).

Literature

M. Mojana, Valentin de Boulogne, Milan 1989, p. 78, under cat. no. 13 (as a copy after Valentin).

Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work may have been recently varnished. It could be hung in its current state, but the restoration could also be re-examined. The cracking to the surface is noticeably raised at present, giving the surface a rather distracting appearance. This older lining could be re-examined, which would improve the surface. The paint layer is very healthy and does not show a lot of restoration. There are only small spots here and there addressing a few cracks and small losses. The turban and face of the figure in the upper left has received slightly more restoration than other areas. There is another line of restorations running vertically through the face of the figure in the upper right into his hand and the helmet of the figure below him. The condition is good, but the surface is slightly distracting.

Catalogue Note

This dramatic and evocative scene follows the composition of The Mocking of Christ in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see Literature).
