Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in remarkably good condition, given its period. The panel is unreinforced on the reverse. It is slightly curved from top to bottom. The paint layer is stable. There is one old thin crack in the wood in the upper left corner, but otherwise the panel has survived beautifully. The gilding in the halo is original but slightly worn. There are old tiny unretouched losses in the green gown of the saint and a small group of losses to the right of her cup. The picture would respond very well to cleaning and in theory could be left unretouched. Saint Lucy's face looks slightly uneven; a halfhearted attempt at cleaning may have lightened the pigment in the forehead.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
