Description

  • Ludolf Backhuysen
  • Dutch men o'war and smaller craft at a port near Amsterdam
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Wayne Francis Palmer (1895-1983), Springlake Plantation, Mobile, Alabama;
Thence by descent in the Palmer family to the present owner.

Condition

Canvas has been relined. Under an old, yellowed varnish. The surface has been slightly pressed in the relining, however detail throughout remains quite good. There are some discolored old retouches in the water that are visible to the naked eye and some minor scuffs and small losses around the extreme edges. A very small gouge with some paint loss can be seen at the bottom edge at right. Under UV light: there are some scattered retouches in water as mentioned and other small scattered ones evenly distributed in sky, water and boats. This painting would benefit from a light cleaning and readdressing of the old discolored retouches. In a carved and gilt wood frame with some nicks and losses.
