Description

  • Karl Gottfried Traugott Faber
  • View of Dresden through an open window
  • oil on canvas

Exhibited

Dresden, Kunstakademie, Exhibition, 1823, no. 615.

Literature

C. A. Böttiger, "Landschaften auf der jetzigen Ausstellung," in Artistischen Notizenblatt, no. 17, vol. 20, September 1823, p. 66 (as painted for a "family man" to serve as a remembrance);
G. Spitzer, Meisterwerke der Romantik in der Dresdner Galerie, Dresden 2012, under entry for the Dresden Galerie version.

Condition

The canvas is unlined. Overall the image is well preserved, and the painting presents an extremely attractive and decorative image. There are some areas of craquelure, thinness and reworking visible along the lower ledge of the window as well as the upper edge. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching on the aforementioned areas, as well as some inpainting to the craquelure visible in the darker areas of the lower ledge and a few thinly painted retouches are along the right and left edges. The landscape overall is well preserved with just a few finely applied strokes of inpaint along the distant landscape at right. A readdressing of some of the old, rather clumsily applied retouchings along the lower edge could be improved. The painting can be hung as is and is offered in a plain, brown wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Another version of this composition by Faber, with slight differences, is in the Dresden Gemälde Galerie Neue Meister Albertinum (inv.no. 2010/07; oil on canvas, 43 by 33.5 cm).  That picture is dated to 1824.

The view looks to the south from the window of a popular inn named Antons, located upriver from Dresden on the left bank of the Elbe.1

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan for confirming this painting to be by Faber.  It dates to slightly earlier than the 1824 version in Dresden Gemälde Galerie Neue Meister.
