Description

  • William Scott, R.A.
  • White Square on Black Ground
  • signed and dated 80 on the reverse
  • oil on canvas
  • 51 by 51cm.; 20 by 20in.

Provenance

Gifted by the Artist to Michael Kustow, former Director of The Institute of Contemporary Arts and Commissioning Editor for the Arts at Chanel Four, and thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Original canvas. The canvas appears sound. There are stretcher lines visible around the edges of the canvas. There is some rubbing around the edges of the canvas in places, with some associated flecks of loss. There is some slight rubbing to some of the impasto tips. There are some slight dents and scuffs to the surface of the work, visible upon close inspection, and there is an old scuff at the centre of the lower edge, visible upon very close inspection, and a few very minor old scratches. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the aforementioned old scuff at the centre of the lower edge, and one or two further small flecks of retouching to some light scuffs in the lower half of the work, which have been very sensitively executed. There is also some fluorescence apparent to the some of the other pigments, but these are thought to be in keeping with the Artist's materials, and not indicative of retouching. Unframed.
