Condition

The medium is gouache on heavy paper. The work is in very good overall condition. There are remnants of old tape and adhesive at the center of the top and bottom edges; lower left and lower right corners, verso. In the left and right margins there are fine pencil framing lines and minor frame abrasion. The sheet edges are mildly deckled. Recto, there is some darkening along the extreme right edge, near the upper right corner. There is some extremely faint pentimenti scattered - a ghost of a sailboat below the boat with blue sails at far right is the most apparent. There is a small area of fark pigmentation in the lower left corner along the bottom edge. Verso there are a few scattered spots of foxing. The media is extremely strong and vibrant and the work presents very well.

Catalogue Note

The English naval squadron first visited the French port of Brest in 1904 as a symbolic gesture of the Entente Cordiale between the two nations. Their visit was followed by a royal review of the French squadron at Cowes in August, 1905. The yearly arrival of the festive flotilla served as a perfect opportunity for Raoul Dufy to use his sense of color, line and dynamic composition. The playful use of perspective which captures the different shapes of the ships with their bright flags against a deep blue background exemplifies Dufy's own take on Fauvist tenets. The present work is closely related to another gouache of the same subject in the permanent collection of the Musée de Beaux Arts in Limoges.
