Catalogue Note
In the quest of innovative modern design combined with high-complication movement, in 1999, Richard Mille started to work on the RM008 project, the most complicated watch that he has ever produced. Incorporating all the characteristics of the RM004 split-second chronograph, the RM008 features a tourbillon carriage made up of 85 parts and weighing just a third of a gram (0.34g), pushing the time master's craftsmanship to the next level. The assembling and regulating requires several months to complete.
As part of the Richard Mille masterpiece collection, the RM008 Tourbillon Split-Second Chronograph watch has an exquisite set of complications. Adapting the concept of modern architecture, RM008 allows the optimum use of the functions and technical solutions to create the sophisticated balancing of aesthetics and logic. The geometrical path of the column wheel ensures a perfect simultaneity with the movement, to make the split-second fly back consume the least energy.
Besides the calibre of RM008's complication of a tourbillon with the prominent complexities of a split-second chronograph movement, another exotic element is the torque indicator complication that is positioned to the right of the barrel, between 12 and 1 o'clock. Torque indication supplies information about the mainspring’s tension: when below 53 DNMM, the spring is too slack, at the other extreme, at about 65 DNMM, excessive tension can adversely affect the running of the movement and may even cause damage.
