Description

  • porcelain
the rounded sides rising from a tapered foot to a slightly everted rim, covered in a pale white glaze, the exterior decorated in anhua with two striding five-clawed dragons, in pursuit of 'flaming pearls', the base with a six-character mark in underglaze blue

Condition

This bowl is in good condition, except for an approximately 2cm glaze crack running to the interior base. There are some minor iron spots to the glaze to the interior.

A closely related bowl from the collection of Dr Ip Yee, included in the Min Chiu Society exhibition Monochrome Ceramics of Ming and Ch’ing Dynasties, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1977, cat. no. 134, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 22nd May 1985, lot 200; another in the collection of Brian McElney was included in the exhibition Porcelains of the High Qing, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, 1983, cat. no. 32; and a third, in the Baur collection, is illustrated in John Ayers, The Baur Collection, Geneva. Chinese Ceramics, vol. 3, Geneva, 1972, pl. A408. Further bowls of this type were sold at auction; two were sold in these rooms, the first, 11th July 1978, lot 207, and the second, 9th December 1986, lot 268; another was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 24th May 1978, lot 183; and a fourth bowl from the collection of Stephen Junkunc III, was sold at Christie’s New York, 19th March 2008, lot 648.
