  • A jewelled two-colour gold and enamel portrait snuff box, Pierre-François Drais, Paris, 1777
  • ivory (miniature), gold, enamel, diamond, shagreen
  • 5.1cm., 2in diameter
circular, the lid set with a portrait miniature of a lady in a purple dress with plumes in her powdered hair, framed by rose-cut diamonds, the sides and base enamelled in translucent blue  over a concentric reeded engine-turned ground, the borders chased in two-colour with acanthus, oves and laurel garlands, maker's mark, Paris date letter, charge and discharge of J.B. Fouache, with gold shagreen case

The interior with early 20th century card painted with a flower and inscribed: 'This Box with a portrait of Marie Antoinette was presented by Her to her friend'

Condition

the miniature with artist's join, enamel possibly restored, scrapes to enamel on sides. very charming.
