Condition

On a stable panel with a very slight bow at the lower edge. Under UV: Inpainting to address frame abrasion at lower and upper edges and at the lower right edge as well as a few isolated dots of inpainting in the landscape.

Catalogue Note

The present work's elegantly dressed ladies are enjoying a leisurely afternoon in a lush garden, unaffected by the tempestuous scene of violence and passion carved into the stone below them. For this relief, Capobianchi has sourced a Roman marble sarcophagus, documented in the Villa Borghese in Rome, depicting a battle scene between the Greeks and the Amazons (fig. 1). In the center of the panel, the Amazon Queen Penthesilea expires in the arms of Achilles; he fell in love with her as he was dealing her death blow.
