Catalogue Note

Diego Giacometti had, according to our knowledge, produced five screens. The first model was executed for Dr. Illouz's medical practice circa 1970.
Four other models were commissioned by a collector for his Parisian apartment.
The decoration was entrusted to Diego Giacometti who designed the various decorative elements of the property. Diego had a special attachment for this place he visited some years ago with Alberto and Marlène Dietrich.
The artist created and delivered a staircase, coffee tables, chairs, door handles and a set of four screens including the present lot.
The four screens replaced the balustrades overlooking the drawing-room and were placed next to each other, thus concealing the night quarters on the first floor.
Three screens were executed in sanded oak, decorated thoughout with bronze animals and leaves, each unique from each other and a fourth in painted wood decorated with caryatids in bronze.
From the living room one could simply look up to see a succession of animals and leaves running everywhere.
André Masson, a close friend of the commissioner, gave titles to the screens with Vieira Da Silva : "Les animaux Rois" (The animals Kings) and "Les Prêtresses du silence" (The Priestess of silence).
The genesis of this commission started in 1983, was confirmed and delivered in 1984 and is one of the last main private commissions realised by Diego Giacometti who passed away eight months later.
