Catalogue Note

“No matter how complex the extent of the LOVE cycle may be, the evolution of the logo itself is consistent with Indiana’s striving from his earliest work to distill the essence of a word to its most immediately communicative visual form. ‘In a sense,’ he has said, ‘LOVE is purely a skeleton of all that the word has meant in all the erotic and religious aspects of the theme, and to bring it down to the actual structure of the calligraphy is to reduce it to the bare bones.’" (the artist in “Autochronology,” Exh. Cat., Austin, Blanton Museum, Robert Indiana, 1977, p. 53)
