Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of very light wear to the turning edges and corners of the work, only visible upon close inspection. The surface texture is inherent to the artist’s working method and the areas of minor impasto are well intact. Under Ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

"I had a conversation with John Coltrane, in 1965, at the Club Coronet in Brooklyn…Coltrane told me how he equated his sound to sheets: the sound you hear in his music comes at you in waves…I think that, in plastic terms, translating from sound, I was sensing sheets, waves of light. A sheet of light passing, that’s how I was seeing light. That’s why I refer to these paintings as energy fields." Jack Whitten
