Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is very light evidence of handling along the edges. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. Any inconsistencies in the paint application appear to be the result of the artist’s working method. Under very close inspection, a ½-inch drip accretion is visible in the lower left area of the blue chevron line. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, one very faint 2-inch and one very faint 3-inch horizontal line, approximately 36 inches up from the lower left corner, fluoresce lightly. Unframed.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

"Like arrowheads moving down or across the picture surface, this dramatic layout [of the Chevrons] imposed a bold sense of direction, forcing Noland to find colors to take advantage of the abrupt transition from one band to the next...arranging those hues with dazzling exactitude."
