Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is a very slight undulation to the sheet, inherent to the artist’s working method, and the sheet has lightly discolored with age. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. The sheet is hinged verso to the mat intermittently along the edges. Framed under Plexiglas. Please note the auction begins at 9:30 am on November 17th.

Catalogue Note

"What we want to make is something that fills utterly the sight, and can't be used to make life only bearable; if the painting till now was a way of making bearable the sight of the unbearable, the visual sumptuous, then let's now strip away...all that."
Sam Francis in a letter to Museum of Modern Art curator Dorothy Miller in 1957
