Catalogue Note
The present weaving relates to the second version of De Vos’s Fish Quay scene, known as the Fish Market. The architecture, the boats and several of the figures vary from the earlier versions; De Vos was known to have altered the compositions. Judocus de Vos (1661-1734) was from an established Brussels weaving family and is thought to have obtained the ‘Teniers’ cartoons from the weavers Jacob van de Borcht and Le Clerc. A nearly identical tapestry is in Burley-on-the-Hill in Rutland and includes a border with coat of arms (Marillier, op. cit.)
