Catalogue Note

The present table is a mixture of Kentian and Rococo influences, resulting in its unique and dramatic form. The legs of the present table relate to a drawing by William Jones, illustrated in Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the 18th Century, London: 1958, fig. 22, with similar scroll feet and the beading down the center of the legs. However, the lush palm fronds crawling up the backs of the legs are more reminiscent of John Vardy's design. Similar palms are seen on Vardy's drawings of mirrors, such as those on a mirror for the Duke of Bolton and another for Hackwood Park. Equally, the apron's curves relate to the designs of the High Rococo designer Matthias Locke. The transitional aspects of this table's design make it an exciting example of English furniture history.
