Catalogue Note

This clock is a typically central European adaptation of the so-called bon sauvage clocks, which gained great popularity in France during the Directoire period. Whereas in France these clocks were always executed in ormolu and patinated bronze, in the Habsburg lands these materials were substituted with ebonized and gilt wood, mostly for economic reasons.
