For comparable chairs with similarly exaggerated knees and low seats, see Jan Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch Period, The Hague, 1985, p. 107. The bold carving on the chairs offered here is also related to that found other types of furnishings from the Dutch colonial lands such as a Batavian cabinet and a lacquered settee, see ibid., pp. 64 and 91, respectively.
