A set of four Chinese carved hongmu and marble inlaid chairs, 19th century

the backs inset with white marble roundels, the seats with mottled pink marble

Probably acquired by James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-1860);
Thence by descent.

These decorative chairs are in fair 'country house' condition. There is evidence of old repairs and historic restorations to each chair. The marble of the backrests with variations and evidence of repairs, two apparently with restored breaks. The marble seats with restored breaks and some loses at these points. generally the 'estate' repairs are fairly crude, in particular one marble seat has been secured with screws. Three chairs formerly with bamboo covers to the front stretcher, one is still present. Overall with a very attractive patina, the wood is lightly discoloured in places and there are some water stains. Minor old marks, chips and scratches consistent with age and use.
