Catalogue Note

Of unusual construction, this textile is closely related to the Hannah Deaves silkwork picture that sold in these rooms Important Americana, January 23, 2005, sale 8053, lot 933. At the time the Deaves picture was the only example of this type known. Though without provenance, the present picture survives in a fine state of preservation, and includes a butterfly not present in the Deaves picture.
