Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. Good overall condition. There are some minor surface scratches with minor losses to the lacquer of the front drawers. There is a vertical crack to the varnish due to a construction crack of the right side panel. The veneer is in good condition with minor losses. There is a small lifting with a loss to the upper part of the left panel. The gilding of the ormolu elements is in good overall condition with minor rubbed areas. The marble top is in good condition. Beautiful design and quality of chasing. Very attractive commode by one of the most important 18th century cabinetmaker.

Catalogue Note

Jean-François Leleu, ébéniste reçu maître en 1764

Les meubles ornés de laque chinoise sont rares dans la production de Jean-François Leleu qui affectionnait particulièrement la sobriété des décors de marqueterie géométrique ou la pureté de panneaux de bois précieux. Une commode en laque du Japon fut présentée chez Koller à Zurich, le 26 mai 2015, lot 1169. Une autre provenant vraisemblablement du marquis de Laborde fut vendue à Monaco, chez Ader Picard Tajan, le 17 mars 1988, lot 81.

La carrière de Leleu fut brillante et il comptait parmi ses meilleurs clients la comtesse Du Barry et le prince de Condé. Il fut l’un des principaux fournisseurs du Palais Bourbon et des châteaux de Chantilly et de Saint-Maur.
