Condition

The canvas is unlined. The surface is very richly textured, particularly in areas where the artist has incorporated sand. The impasto has been well-preserved throughout. There is a minor loss visible in the thicker sand toward the lower right. There are some minor losses along extreme edges of composition likely due to frame abrasions. There are a few fine lines of stable craquelure visible throughout areas of thickest pigment. There is a minor stain in the upper right quadrant. Under UV, certain original pigments fluoresce and there are some scattered strokes of inpainting visible, most notably to the figure's right cheek and the the lower left of his chin. The work is in good condition.
