Condition

This center of a calvary cross is finely sculpted doublesided in stone in good condition, with overall extensive weathering and corrosion to the surface, as can be seen on the photograph, due to outside exposure. Some natural inclusions and deposits to the stone . There are a few chips and losses to the outer edges of the medallions, and lacks to the border where the missing arms of the cross were attached. The stone has been analysed by Lise Leroux from the Louvre Laboratories, date and a geographic location to the Picardie has been confirmed: the stone is said to be a 'calcaire lutetien moyen', quite hard, its extraction can be located to l’Aisne (région de Soissons). The center of the cross is set into a later wooden stand for presentation.

Catalogue Note
