Catalogue Note

This pair of portraits of Sultan and Sultana most likely depict a young Mehmed IV (r.1642-93) and his consort, Rabia Gulnush Valide. With only one exception, all the portraits representing Mehmed IV with moustache are by European artists and represent the Sultan as a young man with a pronounced nose (see other paintings with these features in Kangal, 2000, pp.354-363 and Firenze 1979, inv.no.lc303). The consort alongside Mehmed IV is probably Valide Rabia Gulnush at a young age; of Greek origin, Rabia Gulnush was kidnapped from Greece during the Cretan war (1645-69).
