Catalogue Note

Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law writes to her brother the day after the fatal duel. Writing from Albany on 12 July 1804 to her brother Philip J. Schuyler in Rhinebeck, Mrs. Malcolm gives this account: "Our beloved father has borne the news of Hamilton's loss with that fortitude for which he is so remarkable—his affliction is indeed inexpressible but not of that violent nature as to occasion fear on his account—he supposes that you will hasten immediately here, but it is his wish you should proceed directly to New York to comfort our afflicted Sister & to give her every assistance in your power—God bless you my dear brother let us hear from you immediately on your arrival."
