Overall, the condition of the marble is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. Dog's proper right ear is reattached. Some inclusions to the marble, consistent with the material, including one to the dog's tail and some to the terrasse. There are a few small chips to the edges of the base. There is a small inclusion to the dog's chest. There are a few particular chips to the edges of the terrasse above the signature.

Boisseau was a pupil of Augustin-Alexandre Dumont (1801-1884) and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux (1810-1892) at l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He appeared regularly at the Paris Salon, and then at the French Artist’s Salon, with notable works including  La Crépuscule, which won first-place medal in 1883, and Le Génie du mal, which won a second-place medal in 1880.
