Condition

Overall good condition consistent with age. This is rare and adaptable model, capable of rotating 360 degrees on the circular base. Cleverly, Sarfatti designed the model to function as both an up and down lighter, useful on a desktop or the floor. The glass remains in very good condition with a few minute scattered air bubbles. The nickel plated metal half of the sphere with minor wear, light scratching and a few areas of cloudiness, none of which are visually distracting. Additionally, at the point where the sphere most commonly rests on the base, there are scattered losses to the plating as well as concentrated scuffs. There is a circular area of corrosion to the plating just above the light socket (approx.. 1/4in.). The light socket rocks slightly when touched as one of the holding pegs has been replaced with a modern bolt. The painted interior of the globe with light crazing and cracking to the paint, consistent and in accordance with age. There is expected wear and minor losses to paint at the areas surrounding the socket, none of which are visually obtrusive. The interior spring loaded supports fasten to the exterior socket bolts and are slightly loose, not sitting quite flush or perpendicular to the base. This does not affect stability. Please note the base support is a form of painted plastic, not rubber as denoted in the cataloguing. The paint on this element is rather fragile and brittle and would advise caution when handling to prevent further losses. Please note Sotheby's does not guarantee the functionality and/or the voltage compatibility for electrical wiring, and suggests having all electrical components inspected by a licensed electrician. The sphere shape is a highly characteristic design element in Sarfatti lighting and this rare model combines both this distinguishing form with an exceptional thoughtfulness of design.
