Description

  • George Nakashima
  • "Minguren I" Coffee Table
  • client's name in ink to underside
  • burled oak, with Indian rosewood butterfly key

Condition

Overall good condition consistent with age and gentle use. An early and highly figured example. Presenting with an area of rubbing and three small chips (approx. 1/8 in.) to the side of the table (opposite end from the rosewood key). A faint hairline crack (approx. 4 in.) which has been sensitively restored by a professional and not visually obtrusive. At a weak area at the thinnest width of the table there is a hairline crack which has been later reinforced with a butterfly support to the underside. This crack is visible in the catalogue illustration (the photo of the detail) and not visually obtrusive. Two later braces have been added to the underside to provide additional structural support for this long table. There are three very faint water marks to the top. The base is structurally sound, with additional glue reside at the point where the base meets the top for added support. A wonderfully dynamic table, with highly figured knots and variation to the wood grain. A characteristic work by Nakashima.
