Catalogue Note

A prominent artist of his generation and well-known in Iran, Hossein Khosrojerdi was born in 1957 in Iran and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tehran University. He twice participated in the Triennale-India, was included in the Venice Biennale in 2003, received an award at the Sharjah Biennial in 2001 and has been a founding member of the Iranian Artists' Association.  He has had numerous group and solo shows around the world. His body of work increasingly takes a strong abstract and geometric direction which has an impactful yet refined quality. A series of smaller drawings reflect the fine, complex structures of an architectural quality, with bigger abstract compositions moving towards darker, largely intertwined yet beautifully proportioned canvasses that lead the eye on an endless journey. While deeply rooted in his heritage as a person, Khosrojerdi speaks the universal language of mathematics and geometry. The longer he has been residing in London, the more universal and timeless his creations have become, as if declaring himself a citizen of the world and free of borders.

This particular work, executed in 2014 best typifies the artist's new series, with its rhythmic patterns and linear complexity. A colour scheme of reposing tonalities from white to dark greys, it has a spiritual balance that belies the turbulent life of its creator. Having sold successfully in the Middle East, Khosrojerdi makes a long-awaited debut on the international platform.

"My mind steers through a jumble of knotted lines, seeking its fantasy where it takes me.  Perhaps I inflict on these lines what has come to pass in my own life, making them alive, letting them find their own direction. I risk letting the volatility of these geometric gestures move away from pure drawing, but they go exactly to a place where they inadvertently connect geometry, architecture, three-dimensionality and draughstmanship."
