Catalogue Note

In December 1922, Grigoriev began work on a series of portraits of actors from the Moscow Arts Theatre (MKhAT) who were then in Paris on tour. Konstantin Stanislavsky, the theatre’s pioneering founder, directed and starred in The Lower Depths when it was first performed in Moscow in 1902 and in the 1922 reprisal to which this portrait relates. The play, based on a work by Maxim Gorky, depicts the struggles of various members of the underclass in a lodging house in a Volga town and was Stanislavsky’s first major success.
