Condition

Original canvas. There are several areas of paint loss scattered throughout the painting, some with inpainting: in the main sitter's throat, in the hands of the smoking figure on the right and in the background figures between them, for example. The paint surface is lifting slightly in the sitter's shirt. There is a layer of dirt and scratches to the surface. Patches of incipient craquleure are visible in places. Examination under UV light reveals extensive restoration throughout the composition. Held in a gold coloured frame. Unexamined out of frame.
